Towing Precautions
- When towing 2WD vehicles with automatic transmission and with front wheels raised, tow at speeds less than 35 MPH for distances up to 50 miles. These restrictions do not apply to vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.
- Unlock steering wheel. Place transmission in Neutral. Release parking brake. Connect towing equipment to main structural parts of vehicle, not bumpers or brackets. Follow instructions of wrecker manufacturer.
- If vehicles are to be towed with rear wheels raised, lock steering wheel in the straight-ahead position. Do not use steering lock mechanism.
- For "K" series 4WD vehicles, place transfer case in "2H" position and transmission in Neutral. For "T" series 4WD vehicles, place transfer case in "Neutral" position and transmission in Park (Automatic) or 1st gear (manual). For all models, do not tow faster than 35 MPH or beyond 50 miles.
- For speeds and distances greater than specified, disconnect rear drive shaft at rear axle carrier. Secure drive shaft to underside of vehicle. Tape "U" joint bearing journal caps.
- When towing vehicles with rear wheels raised, follow procedures outlined for towing with front wheels raised. When towing 4WD vehicles with rear wheels raised at speeds and distances greater than specified, remove front drive shaft.
