Base Timing

  1. Inspect timing indicator mark and crankshaft pulley notch. Clean marks if necessary. See Figure . Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Ensure idle speed is within specification. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. Turn off engine and all accessories. Attach timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire.
  2. Start engine and aim timing light at crankshaft pulley. If timing is not within specification, loosen distributor flange hold-down bolt and rotate distributor to obtain correct ignition timing. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table. Tighten distributor flange hold-down bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m) and recheck timing.
