Description & Operation

Steering columns are an energy-absorbing collapsible design. Components include upper and lower column sections, steering shaft and universal joints which connect column and steering gear.

WARNING: Metro Convertible models are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Observe the following precautions before performing any repair. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. DO NOT use electrical test equipment on these circuits. To disable SIR system, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove access cover at back of steering wheel to access Yellow 2-pin SIR connector. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip on Yellow 2-pin connector at back of steering wheel. Disconnect Yellow 2-pin connector. Wait 10 minutes before working on vehicle.
