ISSUE & TIP

We recently repaired a 1990 GEO Tracker that was burning about four quarts of oil every 200 miles. After removing the valve cover for inspection, I noticed the two rear Phillips head screws for rocker shaft alignment were missing. These screws lead right into the oil gallery and were causing a massive internal oil leak.

At freeway speeds, the valve cover was filling up with oil. The extra oil was then sucked into the PCV system and burned in the combustion chambers. We found the two missing screws laying in the head, reinstalled them with thread locker, and had no more problems.
