Code 32, EGR System Error (CALIF. Only): Notes
EGR valve operation is ECM-controlled. A driver inside ECM provides ground for EGR Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV). By turning EGR-VSV on and off, ECM controls vacuum source to EGR modulator. EGR modulator regulates vacuum to EGR valve using exhaust back pressure.
EGR temperature sensor, mounted on base of EGR valve, is used by ECM to ensure EGR functions properly. EGR temperature sensor contains a thermistor. ECM provides a 5-volt reference signal and a ground circuit for EGR temperature sensor. ECM monitors a change in exhaust gas temperature to determine if EGR valve functions when EGR is commanded on.
If EGR valve fails to open, EGR temperature sensor will signal low temperature to ECM. If EGR valve is stuck open, EGR temperature sensor will indicate high temperature to ECM. Code 32 will set and Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will illuminate. A failure in EGR temperature circuit will also set Code 32.
Code 32 will set when one of the following conditions is present for 120 seconds:
- High EGR temperature indicated at idle.
- Low EGR temperature when EGR is commanded on.
- Open or short in EGR temperature sensor circuit.
EGR is not enabled if coolant temperature is less than 182°F (69°C).
- Checks for EGR temperature sensor 5-volt reference signal.
- Checks for poor ground or open ground circuit.
- Checks for short to voltage or ground in EGR temperature sensor5-volt reference signal.
- Checks EGR temperature sensor resistance.
- An inoperative EGR valve will set Code 32.
