Engine Controls - Sensor Operating Range Charts: Introduction

Sensor operating range information can help determine if a sensor is out of calibration. An out-of-calibration sensor may not set a trouble code, but it may cause driveability problems.

CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR VOLTAGE (1)

Application PCM Connector/Terminal Volts
Tracker B/3 & Ground (2) Approx. 0-5
(1) Measured at PCM with ignition on.
(2) Voltage toggles from 0-1 volt to 3-5 volts as distributor rotor is turned slowly.
CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR RESISTANCE

Application Ohms @ 68°F (20°C)
Tracker 485-655
ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR RESISTANCE

Temperature °F (°C) Ohms
0 (-18) 14,650
20 (-7) 8100
40 (4) 4780
70 (21) 2350
100 (38) 1250
160 (71) 400
210 (99) 190
INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR RESISTANCE

Temperature °F (°C) Ohms
0 (-18) 14,800
20 (-7) 8250
40 (4) 5200
70 (21) 2500
100 (38) 1300
160 (71) 450
210 (99) 200
CAUTION: Damage to MAP sensor will occur if connections are made incorrectly.
NOTE: MAP sensor specifications for Tracker are not available.
MAP SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE (OFF-VEHICLE)

Altitude (Feet) Vacuum (In. Hg) (1)(2) Output Voltage
0-2000 28-30 3.1-3.6
2001-5000 25-28 2.8-3.4
5001-8000 22-25 2.6-3.1
8001-10,000 20-22 2.4-2.9
(1) MAP sensor output voltage is tested with three 1.5-volt batteries connected in series (output 4.5-5.0 volts). Positive lead of batteries is connected to "Vin" terminal. Negative lead of batteries is connected to "Ground" terminal. Check output voltage between "Vout" and "Ground" terminals.
(2) Voltage should reduce when up to 15 in. Hg of vacuum is applied to MAP sensor.
MAP SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE (OFF-VEHICLE)

Vacuum (In. Hg) (1)(2) Output Voltage
8 2.4-4.4
10 2.1-4.1
12 1.9-3.9
14 1.6-3.6
16 1.3-3.3
(1) MAP sensor output voltage is tested with three 1.5-volt batteries connected in series (output 4.5-5.0 volts). Positive lead of batteries is connected to "Vin" terminal. Negative lead of batteries is connected to "Ground" terminal. Check output voltage between "Vout" and "Ground" terminals.
(2) Voltage should reduce when up to 15 in. Hg of vacuum is applied to MAP sensor.
CAUTION: Blowing compressed air through mass airflow sensor will damage it.
MASS AIRFLOW (MAF) SENSOR VOLTAGE TEST (1)

Application PCM Connector/Terminal Volts
Ign. On, Eng. Off A/9 & Ground 1.0-1.6
Engine At Idle A/9 & Ground 1.7-2.0
(1) Voltage should increase as engine speed increases.
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR RESISTANCE

Application Ohms
Between Terminals No. 1 & 2
With .020" (.51 mm) Clearance At Stop Screw 0-5500
With .031" (.79 mm) Clearance At Stop Screw Infinity
Between Terminals No. 1 & 3
At Idle (1) 300-2000
At Wide Open Throttle (1) 2000-6500
Between Terminals No. 1 & 4 3500-6500
(1) There should be more than 2000 ohms difference between idle and wide open throttle resistance.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) RESISTANCE

Application Ohms
Tracker (1)
(1) With ohmmeter connected to vehicle speed sensor terminals, ohmmeter should alternate between zero and infinity 4 times per sensor shaft revolution.
