Ignition Timing
NOTE:
Verify that increasing engine speed advances ignition timing.
- Ensure transmission is in Neutral or Park. Set parking brake. Inspect crankshaft pulley timing mark and timing mark indicator on timing belt cover. Clean marks as required. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Attach timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
table under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
CAUTION:
Driving with jumper wire installed in test connector will damage catalytic converter.
- Using a fused jumper wire, connect terminals No. 4 (ground) and No. 5 (test switch) of test connector. See Fig 1
. Aim timing light at timing cover timing marks. If ignition timing is not within specification, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate distributor to obtain correct ignition timing. See IGNITION TIMING
table. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt and recheck ignition timing.
- Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Ensure all accessories are off and idle speed is within specification. Adjust idle speed first if it is not within specification. See IDLE SPEED
under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
CAUTION:

- Connect timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Remove cap from test connector, located next to battery. Connect a fused jumper wire between terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Blue/Red wire) of test connector. See Fig 1
.

- Check timing mark alignment on crankshaft pulley with timing marks on timing belt cover. Ignition timing must be within specification. See IGNITION TIMING
table.
- If ignition timing is not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down flange bolts and rotate distributor to obtain correct ignition timing. Tighten distributor hold-down flange bolts. Recheck ignition timing.
- Turn engine off. Remove jumper wire and install cap on test connector. Remove test equipment.
