DTC P0461 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Performance
NOTE:
If DTC P0461 and P0463 are set together, diagnose DTC P0463 first.
- Turn ignition on. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and PCM harness connector "A", terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Red wire). See Figure . Note reading. Add one gallon (3.8L) of fuel to tank. If voltage reading decreases, go to next step. If voltage reading increases, go to step 3).
- Check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article. Repair as necessary. Retest system.
- If reading is 0-1 volt, ensure fuel tank is neither full or empty. Adjust if necessary and go to next step. If reading is not as specified, replace fuel level sensor. Retest system.
- Observe fuel gauge. If gauge reads EMPTY, repair open Yellow/Red wire between fuel gauge and PCM. If gauge reads actual fuel level, repair open Yellow/Red wire or poor connection at PCM. If gauge reads FULL, go to next step.
- Disconnect fuel gauge harness connector. If fuel gauge reading drops to empty, replace fuel level sensor. If fuel gauge reading does not change, check Yellow/Red wire for short to ground. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace fuel level gauge. Retest system.
