Generators & Regulators: Description
CR-V and Prelude are equipped with Denso generators. Civic 2-door models are equipped with either Denso or Mitsubishi generators. Civic 3-door and 4-door models are equipped with Mitsubishi generators.
The Denso and Delphi generators use 4 positive and 4 negative diodes to rectify current. The Mitsubishi generator uses 6 diodes to rectify current and 3 diodes to supply current to voltage regulator. A voltage regulator, which is part of the generator, controls charging system voltage based on commands from Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Charging system incorporates Electric Load Detector (ELD), which measures load on the charging system. ELD sends signal to the ECM/PCM, which controls the voltage regulator. By adjusting voltage output, ECM/PCM reduces mechanical load on engine for better fuel economy.
