Idle Speed Adjustment

NOTE:
  • Leave the idle air control (IAC) valve connected.
  • Before checking the idle speed, check these items:
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) has not been reported on.
    • Ignition timing
    • Sparkplugs
    • Air cleaner
    • PCV system
  • Pull the parking brake lever up. Start the engine, and make sure the headlights are off.
  1. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve 2P connector.
  2. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side (passenger's)* of the dashboard.

  3. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 RPM without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  4. Check the idle speed without load conditions: headlights, blower fan, radiator fan, and air conditioner off.

    Idle speed should be:

    IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATION

    M/T  900+/-50 RPM
CVT  900+/-50 RPM (in Park or neutral)
  5. If needed, adjust the idle speed by turning the idle adjusting screw (A) 1/2-turn clockwise or counterclockwise.
    NOTE:
    • Do not turn the idle adjusting screw (A) more than 1/2-turn without checking the idle speed.
    • Do not turn the idle adjusting screw when the air conditioner is on.

  6. After turning the idle adjusting screw (A) 1/2-turn, check the idle speed again. If it is out of spec, turn the idle adjusting screw (A) 1/2-turn again.
  7. Let the engine idle for 1 minute with high electric load (A/C switch ON, temperature set to max. Cool, blower fan on high, rear window defogger on, and headlights on high beam).

    Idle speed should be:

    IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATION

    M/T  900+/-50 RPM
CVT  900+/-50 RPM (in Park or neutral)
NOTE: If the idle speed is not within specification, go to the Symptom Troubleshooting.
  8. Reconnect the EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector.
  9. Do the ECM idle learn procedure (see ECM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE ).
