Shift Lock Solenoid Test

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, and the precautions and procedures in appropriate AIR BAG article under RESTRAINTS.

  1. Remove the steering column upper cover (see STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMN article in STEERING).
  2. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid 2P connector.

  3. Connect the battery positive terminal shift lock solenoid connector terminal No. 1, and connect the battery negative terminal to the terminal No. 2.
  4. Check that the shift lever can be moved from the P position. Release the battery terminals from the shift lock solenoid connector. Move the shift lever back to the P position, and make sure it locks.
    NOTE: DO NOT connect power to the terminal No. 2 (reverse polarity) or you will damage the diode inside the solenoid.
  5. Check that the shift lock releases when the release lever is pushed, and check that it locks when the release lever is released.
  6. If the solenoid does not work, replace it.
