DTC 112: Neutral Switch Malfunction
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC 86 indicated?
YES -Do the troubleshooting for DTC 86 (see DTC 86: F-CAN COMMUNICATION MALFUNCTION ).
NO -Go to step 3.
- Check the NP SWITCH in the PGM-FI DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate ON when the shift lever is in neutral, and OFF when the shift lever is not in neutral?
YES -Go to step 25.
NO -
- If the indicator remains on: Go to step 4.
- If the indicator remains off: Go to step 12.
- If the indicator is flashing: Check the installation of the neutral position switch (see NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT ).
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the neutral position switch 2P connector (see step 2 on NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the NP SWITCH in the PGM-FI DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate OFF?
YES -Replace the neutral position switch (see NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT ).
NO -Go to step 8.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Short the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect ECM connector B (44P) (see step 14 on ECM/PCM REPLACEMENT ).
- Check for continuity between neutral position switch 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground.Fig 1: Checking Continuity Between Neutral Position Switch 2P Connector Terminal No. 2 And Body Ground

Is there continuity?
YES -Repair a short to body ground between the ECM and the neutral position switch.
NO -Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software (see ELD REPLACEMENT ), or substitute a known-good ECM (see SUBSTITUTING THE ECM/PCM ), then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see ECM/PCM REPLACEMENT ).
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK(O).
- Disconnect the neutral position switch 2P connector (see step 2 on NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT ).
- Connect neutral position switch 2P connector terminal No. 2 to body ground with a jumper wire.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the NP SWITCH in the PGM-FI DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate ON?
YES -Go to step 17.
NO -Go to step 21.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Connect neutral position switch 2P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 with a jumper wire.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the NP SWITCH in the PGM-FI DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate OFF?
YES -Repair an open in the wire between the neutral position switch and body ground (G101).
NO -Replace the neutral position switch (see NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT ).
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the jumper wire from the neutral position switch 2P connector.
- Short the SCS line with the HDS.
- Check for continuity between ECM connector B (44P) terminals No. 13 and No. 21, and neutral position switch 2P connector terminal No. 2 individually.Fig 4: Checking Continuity Between ECM Connector B (44P) Terminals No. 13 And No. 21, And Neutral Position Switch 2P Connector Terminal No. 2

Is there continuity?
YES -Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software (see ELD REPLACEMENT ), or substitute a known-good ECM (see SUBSTITUTING THE ECM/PCM ), then recheck. If the symptom/indicator goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see ECM/PCM REPLACEMENT ).
NO -Repair an open in the wire between the neutral position switch and ECM.
- Check the NEUTRAL SWITCH STATUS in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate ON when the shift lever is in neutral, and OFF when the shift lever is not in neutral?
YES -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to INTERMITTENT FAILURES TROUBLESHOOTING .
NO -Go to step 26.
- Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT UPDATE ). If the unit already has the latest software, substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the NEUTRAL SWITCH STATUS in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate ON when the shift lever is in neutral, and OFF when the shift lever is in except neutral?
YES -If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the VSA modulator-control unit was substituted, replace the original VSA modulator-control unit (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ). If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCS TROUBLESHOOTING .
NO -Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 32P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ), then retest. If the VSA modulator-control unit was substituted, go to step 1.
