The powertrain control module (PCM) detects a malfunction by comparing the motor pulses presumed from the engine speed and the motor speed, and the motor pulses measured by the motor control module (MCM)/battery condition monitor module (BCM). If the actual motor pulse is out of range compared to the presumed motor pulse, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.
