Engine resonance has the potential to cause severe engine damage. As a result, the flywheel is equipped with a high rate spring to help smooth out the transmission of power between the engine and the generator motor. But there are still certain RPM levels where resonance can cause vibration. When detected by the powertrain control module (PCM), the RPM range is avoided. This is also the case if resonance is caused by misfire, engine failure or generator motor failure.
