Camshaft Inspection: Inspection

How to use this manual .

  1. Camshaft End Play - Inspect

    Preconditions

    Procedure/Specifications 

    NOTE:  Do not rotate the camshaft during inspection.

    1. Install the front/rear cylinder head covers to the specified torque.

    2. Zero the dial indicator against the end of the camshaft, then push the camshaft back and forth, and read the end play.

    0.05-0.20 mm (0.0020-0.0079 in) 0.40 mm (0.016 in)

  2. Camshaft-to-Holder Oil Clearance - Inspect

    NOTE:  Journal No. is No. 1 on the cam chain side.

    Preconditions

    Procedure/Specifications 

    NOTE:  Do not rotate the camshaft during inspection.

    1. Wipe the camshafts clean, then inspect the lift ramps. Replace the camshaft if any lobes are pitted, scored, or excessively worn.

    2. Clean the camshaft journal surfaces in the cylinder head, then set the camshafts back in place. Place a plastigage strip across each journal.

    3. Install the cylinder head covers to the specified torque .

    4. Remove the cylinder head covers. Measure the widest portion of plastigage on each journal.

    Standard Value (New) Service Limit
    No. 1 Journal 0.035-0.069 mm (0.00138- 0.00272 in) 0.069 mm (0.00272 in)
    No. 2-4 Journals 0.030-0.069 mm (0.00118- 0.00272 in)

    Result 

    • If the camshaft-to-holder clearance is within service limits, go to the cam lobe height inspection.
    • If the camshaft-to-holder clearance is beyond the service limit, and the camshaft has been replaced, replace the cylinder head - Refer to: Cylinder Head Removal and Installation () or Engine Compression Inspection () .
    • If the camshaft-to-holder clearance is beyond the service limit, and the camshaft has not been replaced, go to the camshaft total runout inspection.
  3. Camshaft Total Runout - Inspect

    Procedure/Specifications 

    • Check the total runout.

    Specifications 

    Standard Value (New)
    0.03 mm (0.0012 in) max.

  4. Cam Lobe Height - Inspect

    Procedure/Specifications 

    • Measure the cam lobe height.

    Specifications (Front) 

    Position Standard Value (New)
    a Intake 34.527 mm (1.35933 in)
    Exhaust 34.241 mm (1.34807 in)

    b: Timing Belt Side

    Specifications (Rear) 

    Position Standard Value (New)
    a Intake 34.638 mm (1.36370 in)
    Exhaust 34.351 mm (1.35240 in)

    b: Timing Belt Side

    Result 

    • If it is abnormal, replace the camshaft.
