Ignition Timing
NOTE:
Excel is equipped with a dual diaphragm distributor and will not have an ignition timing adjustment connector.
- Ensure vehicle is at normal operating temperature, all accessories are off and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Vehicle front wheels must be in straight-ahead position and curb idle speed set to specification. For Excel models, go to next step. For Sonata models, go to step 3).
- If adjustment is performed at high altitude, disconnect vacuum hoses from distributor and plug. Leave hoses connected at low altitudes. Check ignition basic timing. Connect vacuum hose to distributor. Check ignition actual timing. Refer to IGNITION TIMING table in this article.
- Ground ignition timing adjustment connector Light Green/Red wire. See Fig 1

Ignition timing will be advanced if distributor is turned to the left and retarded if distributor is turned to the right. After adjustment, tighten mounting nut. Ensure distributor does not move when tightening mounting nut.
