Idle Switch

  1. The idle switch is incorporated in the idle speed control position sensor. Ensure switch is adjusted correctly. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Disconnect idle switch connector. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Green wire) and ground. See Figure and Figure .
  2. With accelerator pedal depressed, continuity should not exist. With accelerator pedal released, continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace idle switch.
  3. Measure power supply voltage from ECM to idle switch. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between idle switch harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Green wire) and vehicle ground. Voltage should be 4 volts or more. If voltage is not within specification, turn ignition off.
  4. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Connect jumper wire between vehicle ground and terminal No. 7 (24-pin connector) on Federal models, terminal No. 17 (22-pin connector) on California models. See Figure . Using ohmmeter, check resistance between idle switch harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Green wire) and vehicle ground.
  5. If continuity does not exist, inspect and repair circuit as needed. If continuity does exist, substitute ECM with known good unit and retest.
