Throttle Position Sensor Inspection

  1. Ensure all harness connectors are connected. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ECM harness connector No. 53 (Green/Red wire) and vehicle ground. Backprobe connector terminal. Voltage should be .25-.60 volt at 800 RPM and 4.25-4.60 volts at WOT.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TPS harness connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between TPS terminals No. 2 and 3. See Fig 1 . Resistance should be 1200-2800 ohms. Connect ohmmeter between TPS terminals No. 1 and 3. Operate throttle from closed to WOT position. Monitor ohmmeter while opening throttle. Ohmmeter needle should move accordingly with throttle movement. Replace TPS if it fails any of above tests.
