Accent, Elantra & Tiburon

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM/ECM control relay harness connector and remove relay. On Accent, relay is mounted behind dash above left front kick panel. On Elantra, relay is located left of steering column, behind dash. On Tiburon, relay is mount in engine compartment relay box, behind battery. On all models, check for continuity between relay terminals No. 2 and 4. See Fig 1. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, replace PCM/ECM control relay.
  2. Using a fused jumper wire, apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 4. Using another jumper wire, connect relay terminal No. 2 to ground. Check for continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 5, and between terminals No. 3 and 5. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, replace PCM/ECM control relay.
  3. Remove battery voltage and ground from PCM/ECM control relay. Check for continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 5, and between terminals No. 3 and 5. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, replace PCM/ECM control relay. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Repair as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition off. On Accent, measure voltage between ground and PCM/ECM control relay 5-pin harness connector terminals No. 2 (Orange wire) and 5 (Red wire). On Elantra, measure voltage between ground and PCM/ECM control relay harness connector terminals No. 2 (Red wire) and No. 5 (Red wire). On Tiburon, measure voltage between ground and PCM/ECM control relay harness connector terminals No. 2 (White/Black wire) and No. 5 (White wire). On all models, if battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open or short circuit between relay and PCM/ECM Fusible Link (20-amp) located in engine compartment relay and fuse box.
  5. Remove PCM/ECM Fusible Link (20-amp) located in engine compartment relay and fuse box. Check continuity across fusible link. If continuity is present, reinstall fusible link. If continuity is not present, replace fusible link and retest.
