Generator Test
NOTE:
Terminals "S", "L", and "B" are marked on generator rear cover.
- Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure all fuses and fusible links in power distribution box are in good condition. Power distribution box is located in front left corner of engine compartment on G20 and I30 models. On QX4 and Q45, power distribution box is located forward of right shock tower. On all models, if fusible links are okay, go to next step. If any fusible link is blown, check for short to ground in power supply between power distribution box and generator terminal "B", and repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe CHARGE light on instrument panel. If CHARGE light does not illuminate, go to next step. If CHARGE light illuminates, go to step 4 .
- Disconnect terminals "S" and "L" at generator. Using a fused jumper wire, ground terminal "L" at harness. If CHARGE light does not illuminate, check the following and repair as necessary: CHARGE light bulb, blown warning light fuse and/or damaged wiring. If light illuminates, replace IC regulator.
- Start engine and raise engine speed to 1500 RPM. If CHARGE light does not illuminate, system is okay at this time. If light illuminates, go to next step.
- Turn engine off. Check drive belt tension, connections at terminals "B", "S" and "L" at generator, and fuse for terminal "S". If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. If CHARGE light is illuminated, go to next step. If CHARGE light is not illuminated, system is okay at this time.
- Raise engine speed to 1500 RPM. Measure voltage at terminal "B" at generator. If voltage is greater than 15.5 volts, replace IC regulator. If voltage is less than battery voltage, field circuit is open. Repair or replace generator as necessary.
