Test B: Long Stopping Distance

NOTE: Factory provided no specifications or distances to use in determining what represents a "LONG STOPPING DISTANCE".
NOTE: On vehicles with ABS, stopping distance may be longer than vehicles without ABS when road conditions are slippery.
  1. Remove fusible link "E" (40-amp) located in the fuse and fusible link box adjacent to the vehicle battery in the engine compartment. See Figure . This disables the ABS system. Road test vehicle and check stopping distance. If stopping distance is okay, perform PRELIMINARY CHECKS  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If a problem is found, repair as necessary and retest system. If stopping distance was not good, re-install fusible link and go to next step.
  2. Road test vehicle and observe ABS warning light. If warning light stays off, test is complete. If warning light stays off but the brakes don't feel or perform correctly, see DISC article in BRAKES. If warning light is on, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM  . If a problem is found, repair accordingly and perform self-diagnostics to confirm problem was corrected or no longer exist.
  3. Check wheel sensors for terminal damage or loose connection. Perform wheel sensor mechanical check. See WHEEL SENSOR  under DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If wheel sensor tested okay, check ABS/TCS control unit pin terminals for damage or the connection of the control unit 31 pin harness connector. See Figure . Reconnect control unit 31 pin harness connector. If wheel sensor mechanism tested bad , repair as necessary. Then perform self-diagnostics to confirm problem was corrected.
