DTC P1298 - Electrical Load Detector (Eld)

  1. Perform PCM reset procedure. See PCM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES. Start engine and turn headlights on. If DTC P1298 is not indicated, system is okay at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at ELD and PCM connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  section. If DTC P1298 is indicated, turn ignition and headlights off.
  2. Disconnect ELD connector. Check for continuity between ELD connector terminal No. 1 (GND) and ground. See Figure . If continuity does not exist, repair open in wire between ELD and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS section. If there is continuity, reconnect ELD connector and go to step 4).
  3. Check for continuity between ELD connector terminal No. 3 (EL) and PCM connector terminal D16. See Figure . If continuity exists, reconnect ELD and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in wire between PCM terminal D16 and ELD. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  section.
  4. Start engine and allow it to idle. While measuring voltage between PCM terminals A9 and D16, turn headlights on. If voltage does not drop, replace ELD. If voltage drops, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
