Anti-Lock Brake System - Introduction: Description
CAUTION:
See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) operates on all 4 wheels. ABS operation is controlled by the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). The EBCM receives input signals from wheel speed sensors to monitor wheel speed. If EBCM determines a wheel is about to lock, hydraulic pressure is adjusted to maintain optimum braking. ABS system consists of an EBCM, "G" sensor/accelerometer, hydraulic unit, Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV), ABS warning light, wheel speed sensors, differential speed sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Not all components are common to each model. Components vary depending on model and application. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS.
NOTE:
For additional information on brake system, see appropriate DISC & DRUM article. For models with rear ABS, see REAR ANTI-LOCK - PASSPORT, RODEO & SLX article.
