Traction Control: Anti-Lock: Description

NOTE: This article also applies to 1999 Acura SLX. For SLX, refer to Trooper, unless otherwise indicated.
WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
CAUTION: See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) operates on all 4 wheels. ABS operation is controlled by the Electronic Hydraulic Control Unit (EHCU). The EHCU receives input signals from wheel speed sensors to monitor wheel speed. If EHCU determines a wheel is about to lock, hydraulic pressure is adjusted to maintain optimum braking. ABS system consists of an EHCU, "G" sensor/accelerometer, hydraulic unit, ABS warning light, wheel speed sensors, and proportioning and by-pass valve.

The ABS is capable of storing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) when a system malfunction is detected. During a malfunction, ABS warning light may flash or remain illuminated. DTCs can be retrieved by observing ABS warning light, or by using a scan tool. See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING  . If a DTC is not present, but a malfunction is evident, trouble shooting may be performed by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.

NOTE: For additional information on brake system, see appropriate DISC & DRUM article.
