Hombre (2.2L)

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Check for blown ECM B fuse (20-amp) in underhood fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to step  20. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  3. Install TECH II scan tool or equivalent to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Use scan tool to command fuel pump ON while listening for fuel pump operation. If fuel pump can be heard running, go to HOMBRE (2.2L)  under FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS. If fuel pump can not be heard when commanded ON, go to next step.
  4. Remove fuel pump relay located in underhood fuse/relay block. Connect fused jumper wire between fuel pump relay plug-in terminals No. 3 (ignition feed wire) and 5 (Grey fuel pump feed wire). Listen for fuel pump operation. If fuel pump can be heard running, go to next step. If fuel pump can not be heard running, go to step  6.
  5. Connect a test light between ground and fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 2 (Dark Green/White wire). Use scan tool to command fuel pump ON. If test light illuminates, go to step  7. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  8.
  6. Connect a test light between ground and fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 3. If test light illuminates, go to step  9. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  10.
  7. Connect a test light between positive battery terminal and fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 1 (Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  11. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  12.
  8. Check for open or short circuit between fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 2 and Black PCM connector harness connector terminal No. 8 (Dark Green/White wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary, then go to step  25. If no problem was found, go to step  13.
  9. Reinstall fuel pump relay into underhood fuse/relay block. Disconnect fuel pump circuit at rear body harness connector. Connect test light between ground and rear body harness connector fuel pump feed wire (Gray wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Use scan tool to command fuel pump ON. If test light illuminates, go to step  14. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  15.
  10. Repair open circuit between fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 3, ECM B fuse (20-amp) and battery positive terminal. Go to step  25.
  11. Replace fuel pump relay. Go to step  25.
  12. Repair open circuit between fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 1 and ground (Black wire). Go to step  25.
  13. Check for loose or corroded terminals at PCM harness connectors. Repair as necessary and go to step  25. If no problem was found, go to step  16.
  14. Connect a test light between positive battery terminal and fuel pump ground circuit (Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  17. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  18.
  15. Repair open circuit between rear body harness connector fuel pump feed wire and fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 5 (Gray wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25.
  16. Replace and reprogram PCM. See PROGRAMMING in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L - HOMBRE article. Go to step  25.
  17. Check for open circuit in fuel pump power or ground wires between rear body harness connector and fuel pump. Repair as necessary, then go to step  25. If no problems were found, go to step  19.
  18. Repair open circuit in fuel pump ground (Black wire). Go to step  25.
  19. Replace modular fuel pump/sending unit assembly. Go to step  25.
  20. Turn ignition off. Disconnect rear body harness connector. Remove fuel pump relay. Connect a test light between battery positive terminal and rear body harness connector fuel pump feed wire (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  22.
  21. Repair short to ground between fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 5, fuel pump and fuel injectors (Gray wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step  25.
  22. Connect a test light between battery positive terminal and fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 3 (ignition feed wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  24.
  23. Repair short to ground between fuel pump relay plug-in terminal No. 3, ECM B fuse (20-amp), and battery positive terminal. Go to step  25.
  24. Check for short circuit to ground in fuel pump feed wire on fuel pump side of rear body harness connector. Repair as necessary and go to next step. If no problem was found, go back to step  19.
  25. Use scan tool to clear all DTCs. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go back to step  2.
  26. Start engine and allow it to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Recheck for any stored DTCs. If any DTCs are stored, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L - HOMBRE article.
