Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read ENG COOL TEMP. If reading is less than -38°F (-39°C), go to step  4. If reading is -38°F (-39°C) or greater, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, read and record FAILURE RECORDS data. Operate vehicle within conditions noted in FAILURE RECORDS data. Using scan tool, read specified DTC. If scan tool displays DTC P0118 FAILED THIS IGN, test ECT sensor. Using a DVOM, measure resistance across sensor terminals. See ECT SENSOR RESISTANCE VALUES  table under DTC P0117. If scan tool does not display DTC P0118 FAILED THIS IGN, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector. Using a jumper wire, connect ECT sensor connector terminals together. Using scan tool, read ENG COOL TEMP. If temperature is 284°F (140°C) or greater, go to step  6. If temperature is not as specified, go to next step.
  5. Connect jumper wire between ground and ECT sensor harness connector Blue/Red wire (sensor input). Using scan tool, read ENG COOL TEMP. If reading is 284°F (140°C) or greater, go to step  7. If reading is not as specified, go to step  8.
  6. Check for faulty connection at ECT sensor. If faulty connection is found, repair as necessary. Retest system. If connection is okay, go to step  10.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Check for open circuit between ECT sensor and PCM White 32-pin harness connector terminal D8 (Green wire). Repair as necessary. Retest system. If no problem was found, go to step  9.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Check for open circuit between ECT sensor and PCM White 32-pin harness connector terminal E9 (Blue/Red wire). Repair as necessary. Retest system. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  9. Check for faulty ECT sensor input or ground circuit connection at PCM. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Retest system. If no problem is found, go to step  11.
  10. Replace ECT sensor. Retest system.
  11. Replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Retest system.
