Powertrain Control Module Replacement
CAUTION:
To prevent internal damage to PCM, ignition must be in OFF position before disconnecting battery or any harness connectors.
NOTE:
Before replacing any component that scan tool suggests are faulty. Ensure that all wiring connections and harness connectors are okay. Ensure that power and ground circuits are functioning properly. For circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS
article.
NOTE:
To prevent possible electrostatic discharge damage to PCM, DO NOT touch PCM connector pins or soldered components on circuit board. DO NOT open replacement part package until part is ready to be installed. Before removing part from packaging, ground package to a known good ground on vehicle. If part has been handled while sitting in car, or while walking around, touch a known good ground before installing part.
Service of PCM normally consists of replacement of or programming of EEPROM. If PCM is to be replaced, ensure that replacement part is correct one for application. New PCM EEPROM must be programmed. To program EEPROM, go to EEPROM PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE . To replace PCM perform following steps:
- Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Block the wheels.
- Remove 2 PCM harness connector retaining screws. See Fig 1.
- Disconnect PCM 80-pin harness connectors E-21 (Blue) and E-22 (Red).
- Remove retaining clip, and remove PCM.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Program PCM. See EEPROM PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE .
