Air Injection System: Operation: XJ6

The air pump supplies air under pressure through a diverter valve, check valve and air rails to exhaust manifold collector tubes. The air combines with exhaust gases to further the burning of hydrocarbons. Air pump is equipped with an electrically operated clutch and is controlled by the engine management system.

The air pump is engaged when coolant temperature is below 95°F (35°C) and engine speed is below 2500 RPM. Check valve prevents flow in air rails when exhaust pressure exceeds air supply pressure. The operating vacuum to diverter valve is controlled by a solenoid valve which operates simultaneously with air pump clutch operation. A vacuum delay valve is use to prevent loss of vacuum to diverter valve during Wide Open Throttle (WOT) operation.
