Checking Clearance (6.0L)

  1. To release fuel pressure, disconnect wire from inertia switch. Inertia switch is located on passengers side footwell on the front door pillar. Start engine and let it idle until engine stalls. Crank engine an additional 5 seconds.
  2. Remove engine cover. Remove air filters and housings. Mark and disconnect vacuum hoses from intake manifolds. If necessary, remove fuel injector rail assembly. Disconnect fuel line from pressure regulator. Disconnect canister purge hose and crankcase vent hose from intake manifolds.
  3. Disconnect ignition coil connectors and remove coils. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle pedestal. Remove both throttle rods (left and right side) from bellcranks. Remove air injection rail-to-check valve hose. Disconnect wiring harness connectors as necessary.
  4. Remove intake manifold nuts and washers. Remove air injection rails from intake manifolds. Remove intake manifolds and gaskets from cylinder head. Remove camshaft cover nuts, bolts and washers. Remove camshaft covers and gaskets. Ensure camshaft bearing caps are tight. Check valve clearance with engine cold.
  5. Rotate engine, and check clearances between heel of cam and cam follower. Record each valve clearance reading. If valve clearance is not within specification, adjustment is necessary. See the VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
