Symptom Chart

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES ACTION
Warning message: 2 WHEEL DRIVE ONLY - TRACTION REDUCED
  • All wheel drive system fault
  • Anti-lock brake system fault
  • Engine system fault
  • Front halfshaft fault
  • Front differential fault
  • Front driveshaft fault
  • Transfer case fault
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transfer case control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the anti-lock brake system control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the engine control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Check the integrity of the front halfshafts
  • Check the integrity of the front differential
  • Check the integrity of the front driveshaft
  • GO to Pinpoint Test C .
All wheel drive inoperative - No drive to the front wheels
  • Front halfshaft fault
  • Front differential fault
  • Front driveshaft fault
  • Transfer case fault
  • Check the integrity of the front halfshafts
  • Check the integrity of the front differential
  • Check the integrity of the front driveshaft
  • GO to Pinpoint Test C .
All wheel drive inoperative after draining and refilling the transfer case fluid
  • Transfer Case Oil Change Reset routine not performed
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, perform routine - Transfer Case Oil Change Reset. If the fault persists, re-configure the transfer case control module with the latest level software and perform routine - Transfer Case Oil Change Reset
Front driveshaft disengaged from transfer case
  • Transfer case/front driveshaft fault
Transfer case clutch over temperature DTC set
  • Tire pressures incorrect
  • Wheel/tire sizes incorrect
  • Front left/right halfshaft disengaged from the front differential
  • Transfer case/front driveshaft fault
Transfer case fluid leaking due to cracked/damaged rear casing (with no evidence of external impact)
  • Intermediate gear bearing failure
NOTE: Only applicable up to transfer case serial number 16830.
  • Install a new transfer case. Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, perform routines - Calibrate Clutch and Transfer Case Classification
Transfer case noise and vibration excessive at all speeds
  • Intermediate gear bearing failure
NOTE: Only applicable up to transfer case serial number 16830.
  • Using the manufacturer approved 'Chassis Ear' equipment, determine if the noise originates in the transfer case. If so, install a new transfer case. Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, perform routines - Calibrate Clutch and Transfer Case Classification
Transfer case noise and vibration excessive during low speed maneuvering with high steering inputs (front and rear driveshaft rotating at different speeds)
  • Coupling engaging unintentionally because of fluid contamination due to bearing wear
NOTE: Only applicable up to transfer case serial number 6021.
  • Install a new transfer case. Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, perform routines - Calibrate Clutch and Transfer Case Classification
