Various engine operating conditions are monitored to determine when EGR operation is necessary. When the EGR valve receives a vacuum signal, the EGR valve opens and meters gases from exhaust manifold into the intake manifold. Vacuum signals are determined by different system components depending upon engine size and vehicle model.
