Neutral Safety Switch (A/T Only)

  1. Neutral safety switch is located on left side of transmission. Remove wiring connector from switch. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between switch center terminal and transmission case.
  2. Continuity should exist only when transmission is in Park or Neutral. Replace switch if continuity occurs in any gear other than Park or Neutral.
  3. Shift transmission into reverse and check for continuity between 2 outside terminals on switch. Continuity should exist only when transmission is in Reverse.
  4. Leave transmission in Reverse and check for continuity between switch outer terminals and transmission case. Continuity should not exist. Replace neutral safety switch if it fails continuity test. If switch tests okay, check gearshift linkage adjustment or back-up light circuit.
