2.5L & 4.0L Only

  1. Leave solenoid electrical connector disconnected. On 4.0L, by-pass the vacuum transducer. See Figure . All models, connect EGR valve solenoid output hose directly to nipple of EGR valve. Note engine idle.
  2. Engine should idle rough or stall. If this occurs, EGR valve is okay. If idle is rough (okay) on 4.0L, go to VACUUM TRANSDUCER TEST (2.5L & 4.0L). If idle does not change on all other models, disconnect hose from EGR valve and connect a hand held vacuum pump to EGR valve nipple. Apply a minimum of 12 in. Hg to valve and note engine idle.

  3. If idle still does not change, go to next step. If engine now idles rough, inspect vacuum lines between vacuum connector of intake manifold and EGR valve for vacuum leaks or defective lines. Check vacuum lines from back pressure hose of EGR valve base (if applicable) to transducer for vacuum leaks or defective lines. See Figure . If no vacuum leaks are found, go to VACUUM TRANSDUCER TEST (2.5L & 4.0L).
  4. If idle did not change at this time, remove EGR valve and inspect valve and exhaust passage in manifold for blockage and correct as necessary. If no blockage is present, replace EGR valve.
