Failure To Start Test
NOTE:
Perform SECONDARY SPARK
under IGNITION CHECKS before proceeding with test.
WARNING:
Set parking brake or block drive wheels before proceeding with this test. Ensure transmission selector is in Neutral or Park.
- Ensure battery has a minimum of 12.5 volts (9.5 cranking volts) available to operate cranking system. Ensure battery cable connections are clean and tight.
- Disconnect ignition coil 2-pin harness connector. Using two 18-gauge or smaller jumper wires, connect ignition coil terminals to 2-pin harness connector terminals so that voltage can be monitored on either circuit. DO NOT backprobe harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM in the WIRING DIAGRAMS section at the end of this article.
- Using a voltmeter, monitor voltage at coil positive terminal. Crank engine for 5 seconds. If voltage is at or near battery voltage for 5 seconds, turn ignition off and go to next step. If voltage is near zero volts, check PCM and auto shutdown relay. See TESTS W/CODES - 2.5L article. If voltage is at or near battery voltage, and drops to zero after 1-2 seconds, check camshaft position sensor-to-PCM circuit. See TESTS W/CODES - 2.5L article.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM 60-pin connector and ensure connector is clean, has no spread terminals and is not damaged. Make a special coil testing jumper wire using a .33 microfarad capacitor, 3 alligator clips and 18-gauge wire. See Fig 1 . Remove test lead from coil positive terminal. Connect an 18-gauge jumper wire between battery positive terminal and coil positive terminal. Remove coil wire from distributor cap. Position end of coil wire about 1/2" (13 mm) from block.
- Connect special coil tester jumper wire alligator clip "A" to PCM 60-pin connector terminal No. 19 (Gray wire). Connect jumper wire alligator clip "B" to negative side of coil. Momentarily connect jumper wire alligator clip "C" to ground. When alligator clip "C" is removed from ground, a spark should be generated at coil wire end.
- If a spark is generated, replace PCM. If a spark is not generated, connect jumper wire alligator clip "B" to negative side of coil. Momentarily connect jumper wire alligator clip "A" to ground. If a spark is generated when alligator clip "A" is removed from ground, repair open in circuit between coil and PCM. If a spark is not generated, replace coil.
