Test 15A - Compass/Mini-Trip Computer Module Problems

  1. Using scan tool, select Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC). If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE or scan tool screen is blank, go to TEST 20A . If scan tool responds, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, select AUTO SELF TEST. Observe CMTC screen. If any CMTC screen segments fail to light, or screen displays FAIL or CCD, replace CMTC module. If self test passes, go to next step.
  3. Rotate instrument cluster dimmer control to low. If CMTC does not respond to dimmer control, go to TEST 38A . If CMTC responds to dimmer control, go to next step.
  4. Check if outside temperature display is operating properly. If outside temperature display is inoperative or wrong, go to TEST 16A . If outside temperature display is operating properly, go to next step.
    NOTE: The Miles Per Gallon (MPG), instantaneous fuel Economy (ECO), and Distance To Empty (DTE) calculations (displays) are only accurate to plus or minus 5 percent.
  5. Check if MPG display and ECO display are operating properly. If MPG display or ECO display is inoperative or wrong, go to TEST 17A . If MPG and ECO displays are operating properly, go to next step.
  6. Check if Odometer (ODO) display is operating properly. If ODO display is inoperative or wrong, go to TEST 17A . If ODO display is operating properly, go to next step.
  7. Check for CMTC response to all of its switches. If CMTC fails to respond to any of its switches, go to TEST 18A . If CMTC responds to all its switches, go to next step.
  8. Check if Estimated Time (ET) display is operating properly. If ET display is inoperative or wrong, go to TEST 19A . If ET display is operating properly, go to next step.
  9. Check if DTE display is operating properly. If DTE display is inoperative or wrong, go to TEST 101A . If DTE display is operating properly, CMTC is operating okay at this time. If compass is inoperative or wrong, go to next step.
  10. Locate open area away from large metal objects. Turn ignition on. Press and hold compass/temperature button until CAL is displayed. Driving slowly, perform 3 complete circles. CAL lamp will turn off and compass will be calibrated. If CMTC displays temperature while compass display is blank, go to next step.
  11. CMTC must be demagnetized. If compass display is still blank after CMTC is demagnetized, replace CMTC module.
