No Response

NOTE: This test is for is for a vehicle with an engine that starts and scan tool indicates NO RESPONSE. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE and engine will not start, see ENGINE DOES NOT START & DRB DISPLAYS NO RESPONSE under NO-START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
NOTE: For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, PCM must be reprogrammed. See PROGRAMMING  . After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform TEST VER-1  under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Connect scan tool to a functional Data Link Connector (DLC) on another vehicle. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to read DTCs. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE, replace initial vehicle's PCM. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Substitute another scan tool adapter cable. Using scan tool, attempt to read DTCs. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, replace original scan tool adapter cable. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE, go next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. PCM is located on left front fender, near radiator support. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, measure resistance of Light Green/Black wire between terminal No. 6 at DLC connector and terminal No. 29 at PCM C3 connector. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open SCI receive circuit (Light Green/Black wire) between DLC and PCM.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 29 (Light Green/Black wire) at PCM C3 connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in SCI receive circuit (Light Green wire).
  5. Measure resistance of Pink wire between terminal No. 7 at DLC connector and terminal No. 27 at PCM C3 connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open SCI transmit circuit (Pink wire) between DLC and PCM.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 27 (Pink wire) at PCM C3 connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in SCI transmit circuit (Pink wire).
  7. At this time, scan tool is assumed to be defective. Replace scan tool.
