Bus Short To 5 Volts

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to step  13 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connectors if equipped. See Figure . Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC), if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to step  12 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to step  10 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster. Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to step  9 .
WARNING: Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before disconnecting air bag control module. If air bag control module is dropped, it must be replaced.
  6. Turn ignition off and wait 2 minutes. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM). Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace ACM. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  7. Ensure all previously disconnected modules are still disconnected. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Check for poor connections between scan tool and DLC. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and DLC connector terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire). See Figure . If voltage is 0.2 volt or less, go to next step. If voltage is greater than 0.2 volt, repair short to voltage in Violet/Brown wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  8. Measure voltage between ground and DLC connector terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire). If voltage is greater than 0.2 volt, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, replace scan tool cable or scan tool as necessary. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  9. Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Black/Light Green wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  10. Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and RKE module connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire). See Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  11. Measure resistance between ground and RKE module connector terminal No. 9 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace RKE module. See REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  12. Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and CMTC connector terminal No. 12 (Black/Light Green wire). See Fig 2 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CMTC. See OVERHEAD CONSOLE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  13. Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and PCM Black connector C1 terminal No. 31 (Black/Tan wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or greater, repair open in Black/Tan wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  14. Measure resistance between ground and PCM Black connector C1 terminal No. 32 (Black/Tan wire). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is 10 ohms or greater, repair open in Black/Tan wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
