Starting System: Description
Mitsubishi permanent-magnet gear reduction starter is used on all models. A planetary gear set transmits power between starter motor and pinion shaft. On 2.5L engines, 4 permanent magnets are used, eliminating potential field wire-to-frame shorts. All models use a starter relay in starter circuit between the battery and starter solenoid terminal. On manual transmission models, the clutch switch is in relay control power circuit between ignition switch and relay. On automatic transmission models, the park/neutral position switch or transmission range sensor are in relay control ground circuit between relay and ground. Starters are not interchangeable between different engine sizes.
