Checking Radiator Fan Operation: Cherokee

  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate radiator fan relay. Check radiator fan operation. If radiator fan is on, go to next step. If radiator fan is off, go to step  3 .
  2. Using scan tool, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If any DTCs are present, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DTC MESSAGES & CODES table under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If no DTCs are present, no problem is indicated at this time. Test is complete.
  3. Using scan tool, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If no DTCs are present, stop radiator fan relay activation and go to next step. If any DTCs are present, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DTC MESSAGES & CODES table under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect radiator fan motor connector. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector terminals are okay, turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate radiator fan relay. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and Light Blue wire at radiator fan motor connector. If voltage pulsates, stop radiator fan relay activation and go to next step. If voltage does not pulsate, go to step  7 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at radiator fan motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between radiator fan motor and ground. Ground connection is located in left front of engine compartment, near Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
  6. At this time, radiator fan motor is assumed to be defective. Replace radiator fan motor.
  7. Ensure ignition is still on. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and terminal D11 (White wire) at radiator fan relay socket in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in right side of engine compartment, next to battery. See Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, check for open in White wire between radiator fan relay and junction block. Junction block is located behind passenger side kick panel. Also check fuse No. 10 (15-amp) in junction block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring as necessary.
  8. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Light Blue wire between radiator fan motor connector and terminal D11 at radiator fan relay socket in PDC. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open Light Blue wire between radiator fan relay and radiator fan motor.
  9. At this time, radiator fan relay is assumed to be defective. Replace radiator fan relay.
