Checking Fuel System

  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system. Listen for fuel pump operation at fuel tank. It may be necessary to use a stethoscope. If fuel pump operation can be heard, go to next step. If fuel pump operation cannot be heard, go to appropriate CHECKING FUEL PUMP procedure.
  2. Ensure throttle cable is not holding throttle open. Repair throttle cable as necessary. If throttle cable is okay, go to next step.
NOTE: Ensure fuel tank is 1/4 full before performing the following test.
  3. Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel rail. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system. Allow fuel pressure gauge to stabilize. If fuel pressure is less than 44.2 psi (3.10 kg/cm2 ), perform REPAIRING LOW FUEL PRESSURE  . If fuel pressure is 44.2 psi (3.10 kg/cm2 ) or more, go to next step.
  4. On Cherokee and Wrangler, if fuel pressure is more than 54.2 psi (3.81 kg/cm2 ) in the previous step, replace fuel filter/pressure regulator. Fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator is located in top of fuel tank. See FUEL FILTER/FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR under FUEL SYSTEMS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. If fuel pressure is 44.2-54.2 psi (3.10-3.81 kg/cm2 ), go to next step. On Grand Cherokee, if fuel pressure is more than 54.2 psi (3.81 kg/cm2 ) in the previous step, check for restricted fuel return line between fuel rail and fuel pump module. Repair fuel line as necessary. If fuel return line is okay, replace fuel filter/pressure regulator. Fuel filter/pressure regulator is located in front of fuel tank, above rear axle. See Fig 1 . If fuel pressure is 44.2-54.2 psi (3.10-3.81 kg/cm2 ), go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate any fuel injector. Using a stethoscope, listen for fuel injector operation. If fuel injector is operating, no problem is indicated at this time. If fuel injector is not operating, repair open ASD relay output circuit to fuel injectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
