Shift Interlock Cable

  1. Shift transmission into Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove gear selector bezel to access cable adjustment. Pull cable lock button up to release cable. See Figure . Use a spacer to create a .039" (1.0 mm) gap between shifter pawl and top of shift gate. Pull cable forward (rearward on Grand Cherokee) and release.
  2. Snap lock button into place. Verify adjustment by attempting to move gear selector. Gear selector should not move. Turn ignition on. Shifting out of Park should not be possible. Apply brake pedal and attempt to shift out of Park. Shifting should be possible.
  3. With transmission out of Park, release brake pedal and attempt to shift transmission through all gears. Release shift button at least once during this procedure. With gear selector in any position except Park, attempt to turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Ignition switch should not go into LOCK position. Shift transmission back to Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If ignition switch can be turned to LOCK position, adjustment is okay.
