One Gauge Not Operating Properly
NOTE:
Ensure instrument cluster is communicating on bus before proceeding.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Press and hold trip/reset button on instrument cluster. Cycle ignition switch from OFF to ON positions. Wait until odometer displays mileage, then release trip/reset button. This will initiate instrument cluster self-test. Observe gauges. Compare operation of suspect gauge(s) with instrument cluster self-test chart. See Fig 1 . If all gauges reach calibration point, go to next step. If any gauge does not reach calibration point, go to step 3 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, SYSTEM TEST then monitor PCM status. If scan tool displays PCM ACTIVE ON BUS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display PCM ACTIVE ON BUS, perform NO RESPONSE FROM POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Identify inoperative gauge, and perform appropriate test. See GAUGE TEST INDEX
table. After test is complete, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST
under VERIFICATION TESTS.GAUGE TEST INDEX

See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CHEROKEE article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. - Raise and support vehicle. Start engine, and place gearshift selector in forward gear. Using scan tool, monitor Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) status while drive wheels are moving. If scan tool and speedometer match, repair VSS signal related DTC. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CHEROKEE article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If scan tool and speedometer do not match, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANELS - CHEROKEE article. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
