Short To 5 Volts Failure

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C3. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS TEST. If scan tool displays BUS OPERATIONAL, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS OPERATIONAL, go to step  4 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors. Measure resistance between terminal No. 30 (Violet/Brown wire) at PCM harness connector C3 and terminal No. 17 (Orange wire) at PCM harness connector C1. Measure resistance between terminal No. 30 (Violet/Brown wire) at PCM harness connector C3 and terminal No. 31 (Orange wire) at PCM harness connector C2. See Fig 1 . If any resistance is less than 800 ohms, repair short between appropriate wire(s). Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If all resistances are 800 ohms or greater, go to next step.
  3. Measure resistance between terminal No. 28 (White/Black wire) at PCM harness connector C3 and terminal No. 17 (Orange wire) at PCM harness connector C1. Measure resistance between terminal No. 28 (White/Black wire) at PCM harness connector C3 and terminal No. 31 (Orange wire) at PCM harness connector C2. If any resistance is less than 800 ohms, repair short between appropriate wire(s). If all resistances are 800 ohms or greater, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  4. WARNING: DO NOT reconnect battery before turning ignition switch to ON position and ensuring no one is in vehicle. Air bag may deploy.
NOTE: Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before disconnecting Air Bag Control Module (ACM). If ACM is dropped, it must be replaced.
  5. Disconnect following module harness connectors one at a time and check for short to 5 volts using scan tool: Transmission Control Module (TCM), instrument cluster, Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC), Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), then Air Bag Control Module (ACM). Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes. Disconnect next module harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays SHORT TO 5 VOLTS for any module, go to next step. If scan tool does not display SHORT TO 5 VOLTS for all modules, go to step  7 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect module harness connector when bus failure message was eliminated. Measure resistance between Violet/Brown wire terminal at suspect module harness connector and Orange wire terminal at suspect harness connector. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short between Violet/Brown wire and 5 volt supply circuit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is 100 ohms or greater, go to next step.
  7. Measure resistance between White/Black wire terminal at suspect harness connector and Orange wire terminal at suspect harness connector. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short between White/Black wire and 5 volt supply circuit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is 100 ohms or greater, replace module or component that caused bus failure message. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  8. Ensure all modules are still disconnected. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire) at DLC. See Figure . If voltage is less than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4 volts or greater, repair short to voltage in Violet/Brown wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  9. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire) at DLC. If voltage is 4 volts or greater, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage is less than 4 volts, repair or replace scan tool cable or scan tool as necessary. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
