Panel Dimmer Open
Possible Causes:
- Intermittent Condition
- Panel Lamp Dimmer Signal Circuit Open
- Multifunction Switch
- Multifunction Switch Ground Circuit Open
- Instrument Cluster
Testing
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMER OPEN is displayed, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMER OPEN is not displayed, problem does not exist at this time. Check wiring and harness connectors. Check for technical service bulletins.
- Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect Gray 20-pin multifunction switch harness connector. See Figure . Clean connector terminals as necessary. Check resistance of Red wire between instrument panel connector C2 terminal No. 15 and multifunction switch connector terminal No. 8. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Red wire.
- Check resistance between multifunction switch connector terminals No. 7 and 8. See Figure . If resistance is 9250 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 9250 ohms, replace multifunction switch. See appropriate POWER STEERING COLUMNS article.
- Check resistance between multifunction switch connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire) and ground. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black wire.
