Seat Belt Indicator Not Operating Properly
Possible Causes:
- Seat Belt Switch Sense Circuit Short To Ground
- Seat Belt Switch Sense Circuit Open
- Seat Belt Switch Ground Circuit Open
- Seat Belt Switch
- Seat Belt Switch Sense Circuit Short To Voltage
- Instrument Cluster
Testing
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select INPUT/OUTPUTS. Fasten and unfasten seat belt. Display should be OPEN when belt is fastened and CLOSED when seat belt is unfastened. If display is as specified, go to next step. If display is not as specified, go to step 3 .
- Turn ignition off. Perform instrument cluster self-diagnostic actuator test. See VACUUM FLUORESCENT DISPLAY SELF-DIAGNOSTIC ACTUATOR TEST under SYSTEM TESTS in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - WRANGLER article. If seat belt indicator does not illuminate during test, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If seat belt indicator illuminates during test, test is complete.
- Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Fasten seat belt. Check voltage between instrument harness connector C2 terminal No. 2 (Light Green/Red wire) and ground. See Figure . If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage on Light Green/Red wire.
- Disconnect seat belt switch connector. Check resistance between seat belt switch harness connector terminal No. 1 (Light Green/Red wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground on Light Green/Red wire.
- Check resistance of Light Green/Red wire between seat belt switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and between seat belt switch harness connector terminal No. 1. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Light Green/Red wire.
- Check resistance between seat belt switch harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. See Figure . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open on Black wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace seat belt switch.
