Powertrain Verification Test

  1. Inspect vehicle to ensure all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary.
  2. Check engine oil for fuel contamination. Replace oil and filter as necessary.
  3. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was not replaced, go to step  7 . If PCM was replaced, perform steps 4)  through 6)  .
  4. Correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from being stored in Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). If vehicle is equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS), secret key data must also be updated to enable engine starting. Go to next step.
  5. For ABS and air bag systems, enter correct mileage and VIN in PCM. Erase DTCs in ABS and air bag modules. Go to next step.
  6. If vehicle is not equipped with SKIS, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with SKIS, Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM and MISCELLANEOUS. Place Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) in SECURED ACCESS mode by using appropriate Personal Identification Number (PIN) for this vehicle. PIN may be obtained from owner, vehicle's invoice, or from manufacturer. Select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will be transfered from SKIM to PCM. Go to next step.
  7. Start engine. Warm engine to operating temperature. Using scan tool, check for any DTCs. If all DTCs have been diagnosed and repaired, test is complete. If any DTCs exist, diagnose and repair system as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If engine does not start, check for applicable technical service bulletins. Diagnose and repair system as necessary. See SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION  table under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
