Hydraulic Fan Operation: 4.7L

NOTE: For component location, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components.
NOTE: Cooling fan relay may also be referred to as pulse width modulated fan control module.
  1. Turn ignition on. With the DRBIII®, select Engine Test, Systems Test, and Hydraulic Fan Solenoid Test. Actuate the Hydraulic Fan Solenoid Test. Does the fan operate properly? If yes, test is complete. If no, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Check if the fan wiring harness is properly connected at the upper right corner of the fan shroud. Check if the fan wiring harness is properly connected at the fan motor. Check the harness continuity from the cooling fan relay to the fan motor. Inspect connector terminals for proper pin fit and corrosion. Inspect the related fuse and relay. Were any problems found? If yes, repair any defective wiring harness concerns. If no, go to next step.
  3. Inspect the hydraulic circuit between the power steering pump and the hydraulic fan and repair as necessary. Were any problems found and corrected? If yes, test is complete. If no, replace the hydraulic fan assembly.
