Fan, Cooling: Removal: Diesel
NOTE:
The thermal viscous fan drive/fan blade assembly is attached (threaded) to drive pulley hub shaft.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the air cleaner body. .
- Remove the coolant hose (2) from fan shroud (1).
- Remove the upper cooling fan mounting bolts (3).
- Remove the upper radiator seal.
- Disconnect the viscous fan wire harness connector (1).
- Using the (special tool #6958, Wrench, Spanner) and (special tool #8346, Pins, Adapter) (2) and a suitable fan wrench, remove fan blade/viscous fan assembly from fan drive pulley hub shaft by turning mounting nut counterclockwise. Threads on viscous fan drive are RIGHT HAND.
NOTE:
Do not unbolt fan blade assembly from viscous fan drive at this time.
- Do not attempt to remove the fan/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle at this time.
- Remove the four bolts (2) and fan shroud (1) and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly as a complete unit from vehicle.
- After removing fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly, do not place viscous fan drive in horizontal position. If stored horizontally, silicone fluid in the viscous fan drive could drain into its bearing assembly and contaminate lubricant.
- Remove the four bolts and the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive.
