Power Transfer Unit (Service Information): Removal

- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Remove the right front halfshaft. Refer to REMOVAL .
- If equipped with a 2.4L, remove the intake manifold. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to REMOVAL .
- If equipped with a 3.2L, remove the catalytic converter to cylinder head flange upper bolts and separate the catalytic converter by lifting and sliding the flange up and away from the cylinder head. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL .
- With the rear catalytic converter separated from the cylinder head, and wire it up and out of the way.
- Remove the crossunder exhaust pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the heat shield (1) to the PTU.
- Separate the heat shield (1) from the PTU.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the PTU support bracket (1) to the PTU.
- Remove the bolts (4) holding the PTU support bracket (2) to the engine block and the oil pan (3).
- Separate the PTU support bracket (2) from the PTU (5).
- Disconnect the wire harness connector from the actuator.NOTE:
Upper bolts shown in illustration.
- Using an extension and crows foot (1), remove the bolts (2) holding the PTU to the transmission.
- Using a pry bar, gently separate the PTU from the transmission.
- Push the PTU (1) to the right side of the vehicle and tip the left side downward and out of the vehicle.
