Fuel Pump Module

NOTE:

Fuel pump for the saddle style fuel tank shown in illustration. Single style similar.

WARNING:

Risk of injury to eyes and skin from contact with fuel. Wear protective clothing and eye protection. Risk of poisoning from inhaling and swallowing fuel. Pour fuel only into appropriately marked and approved containers. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

WARNING:

The fuel system is under constant high pressure even with engine OFF. Until the fuel pressure has been properly released from the system, do not attempt to open the fuel system. Do not smoke or use open flames/sparks when servicing the fuel system. Make sure the area in which the vehicle is being serviced is in a well ventilated area. Failure to comply may result in serious or fatal injury.

  1. Perform the fuel system pressure release procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  .
    NOTE:

    The fuel pump module has to be properly located in the fuel tank for the fuel level gauge to work properly.

  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the auxiliary fuel pump. Refer to MODULE, FUEL PUMP, REMOVAL .
  4. Remove the right side rear seat for the single fuel pump module. For the saddle style fuel tank. Remove the rear seat assembly. Refer to SEAT, REAR, REMOVAL .

  5. Cut along the perforated lines in the carpeting and position aside (1).
  6. Remove the screws (2) that secure the fuel module cover (3) to the floor.

  7. Lift up on the fuel pump module access cover (3, 4) and disconnect the wire harness connectors (2, 6).
  8. Use a marker and place a mark across the position of the fuel pump module lock-ring, fuel pump module and the fuel tank prior to removal.

  9. Disconnect the fuel tank vapor line (2, 3) from fuel pump module.
  10. Disconnect the fuel lines (1) from the fuel pump module.

    NOTE:

    Prior to removing the fuel pump module, use compressed air to remove any accumulated dirt and debris from around fuel tank opening.

  11. Position the lock-ring remover/installer (1) (special tool #9340, SAE Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench) or into the notches on the outside edge of the lock-ring (2).
  12. Install a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar into the lock-ring remover/installer.
  13. Rotate the breaker bar counterclockwise and remove the lock-ring (2).
    WARNING:

    The fuel pump module reservoir does not empty out when the tank is drained. The fuel in the reservoir will spill out when the module is removed.

    NOTE:

    Do not spill fuel into the interior of the vehicle.

  14. Lift up and removed the fuel pump module out of the fuel tank using caution not spill fuel inside the vehicle or bend the float arm.
  15. Tip the fuel pump module on its side and drain all fuel from the reservoir.

  16. Remove and discard the rubber O-ring seal.
